Description:

Latvia, like other countries, is experiencing climate change. If climate change is not curbed, it will continue to become more severe and will have a significant impact not only on Latvian nature but also on our economy, infrastructure, society, etc. The European Commission links the future of the European Union with climate neutrality – a situation where we do not create more emissions than can be absorbed through photosynthesis by forests, meadows, etc. or we bury excess emissions under the ground (similar to how we store natural gas in Inčukalns). Furthermore, the European Commission believes that climate neutrality can be achieved by 2050, and this will benefit not only the climate, but also the economy and society. By 2017, compared to the so-called base year (1990), Latvia's emissions have decreased by 57%. The main sources of emissions are the energy industry (36%), transport (28%) and agriculture (24%). During the discussion, we will discuss what exactly climate neutrality means and what Latvia could benefit from it. We will discuss the following questions: How can Latvia become a climate-neutral country? What can various industries contribute? What changes should be made in households and people's daily lives and how can they be achieved? How do we make the transition to climate neutrality socially just and sustainable? We will try to understand what each of us should do and how our lives will change in the coming decades.
